It’s Time for the Heat to let Wade Go

Dwayne Wade has opted out of his contract with the Miami Heat. According to ESPN and numerous sources, Wade is looking for a 3- year contract worth at least $48 million. ESPN’s Chris Broussard has been quoting as saying, “Wade has been a good soldier for Miami, taking pay cuts, and now it is time for Miami to pay him.” I will write this as clearly as possible. I don’t want there to be any confusion or any ambiguity. The Miami Heat should let Wade walk. They should not resign him for 3 years at $ 48 million.

Wade was a great player and he can still be great at times but he is passed his prime and injuries have done him in. Wade can no longer be a dominate player on back to back nights or dominate a playoff series.

Over the past 4 years Wade has been hobbled by injuries.

2012 he played in 49 games during the regular season.

2013 he played in 69 games during the regular season.

2014 he played in 54 games during the regular season.

2015 he played in 62 games during the regular season.

In a salary cap league, you can’t pay players for what they were, you have to pay them for what they are now. The Knicks paid Amar’e Stoudemire close to $100 million. Over the past 5 years, Stoudemire only played over 50 games with New York once (2013-14) and his point production, rebounds and minutes played have declined ever year. Wade wants to be played like a number one option, but he is longer a number one option. Losing organizations don’t give aging players on the decline big time money. The Lakers paid Kobe Bryant $48 million and he played in 6 games in 2013 and 35 games in 2014.

The Miami Heat owe absolutely nothing to Wade. He has been paid handsomely for his time in South Beach and they have won 3 championships together. Tim Duncan made $10 million last year, Dirk Nowitzski made $8.3 million. Both of these Hall of Fame players took pay cuts so the team could be better. Wade isn’t do this. If I am Pat Riley I offer Wade a 3 year deal worth 30-34 million, based on team and personal incentives. If not, I let him leave. Miami will be fine without Wade, look at their projected starting lineup (if Wade leaves)…

PG: Goran Dragić

SG: Loul Deng

SF: Justise Winslow

PF: Chris Bosh

C: Hassan Whiteside

I am going to paraphrase from the Movie Rocky III, (Rocky) “Dwayne Wade was a fine champion but his time on top has passed,  I wish him luck.”
