Battle Creek, MI- Third time is a charm for the Battistoni Diesel of WNY’s MUNY AAA semi-pro baseball league. They defeated the Brooklyn Sports Fever 4-3 Saturday to clinch a spot in the NABF World Series finals in Battle Creek, MI. They will face the Lombard Orioles Sunday at Noon at C.O. Brown Stadium.
While trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the 8th, The Diesel put a three run rally together. Then narrowly hung on to the one run lead in the Top of 9. Brooklyn had a man on second base with 2 outs, but were unable to bring home the tying run.
Lombard advanced by beating the Michigan City Lakers 4-0 and will face the Diesel for the second time in three days. The O’s went 2-1 in pool play with their only loss coming at the hands of Buffalo, NY’s Diesel 5-2. Lombard share the tourney lead in runs with 35 and have given up 12, while Battistoni have tallied 34 runs and surrendered 21. The O’s have gone 4-0 since that opening game loss, along the way they beat the Cincinnati Chiefs twice. Friday night in the final pool play match-up 12-4 and today in the quarter finals 8-1. The Chiefs beat the Diesel Friday morning.
Lombard went 17-9 in the Chicago Suburban Baseball League (CSBL) and scored 169 runs. They won 8 of their last 10 league games before winning the Fort Wayne regional. Battistoni Diesel went 26-2 in the MUNY AAA league and were undefeated in their regional tournament.
Both teams are making their first trip to the NABF World Series finals.
