Battle Creek, MI – The Battistoni Diesel came out ready to play Thursday in their first game of the NABF Major Division World Series, defeating the Lombard Orioles 5-2. Rob Luehrsen (Williamsville East) went yard in the top of the 2nd giving BD a 2-0 lead.
The Orioles tied the game in the bottom of the 5th when CF Marcus Pingleton blasted a two-run shot with 2 outs. The Diesel responded with a three run 6th and silenced the O’s bats down the stretch. BD starting pitcher Kevin Hughes (Starpoint) threw a 4 hit, complete game collecting 6 K’s along the way. Luehrsen finished going 2-4 with 4 RBI’s “We are one team. Everyone believes in the next guy” he said after the win.
Friday, BD will play two more games in the preliminary round. At 11 am they face the Cincinnati Chiefs who are no strangers to this tournament. They will then play the Englewood Athletics at 6pm. The Chiefs blanked the A’s Thursday 4-0.
The Battistoni Diesel needs to win one game on Friday to qualify for the quarterfinal, single-elimination stage of the NABF World Series.
