It’s been a tough season for the Boston Red Sox, whom find themselves in the basement of the AL East for the third time in 4 years. To make matters even worse for the beleaguered team, Manager John Farrell announced on Friday that he has been diagnosed with Stage 1 Lymphoma, WEEI.com reports.
Farrell had surgery last week to repair a hernia, and the cancer was discovered during the operation. He will temporarily step down as Manager to receive treatment, which will start next Tuesday at Massachusetts General Hospital. Bench Coach Torrey Lovullo will be the team’s Manager for the remainder of 2015. Lovullo once managed the Buffalo Bisons while they were affiliated with the Cleveland Indians.
Farrell has not yet released a statement, but CBS Boston has stated that he is optimistic about his condition and fully intent on returning to the team in 2016.
