Buffalo, NY- Things aren’t going well for the Sabres early on in the 2015-16 season. Despite the emergence of Jack Eichel, injuries and poor defensive play have hurt Buffalo’s attempts to start the season on a winning note.
The team hosted the 7-0 Montreal Canadiens at the First Niagara Center Friday evening and were blown out 7-2 in front of a sell out crowd. The Habs went with back up goalie Mike Condon while Buffalo started Chad Johnson who had played admirably despite the record. But, Friday just wasn’t his night. Defenseman Andrei Markov recorded 5-points (1-4). Dale Weiss and Brendan Gallagher each scored a pair while PK Subban added three assists. Condon made thirty-four saves earning his 2nd win of the season.
Former Sabres forward Torrey Mitchell (3) was credited with the game winner with his 2nd period tally.
Johnson made 19 saves.
Saturday the Sabres blew a 2-1, 2nd period lead to the visiting New Jersey Devils, losing 4-3. Adam Henrique recorded two goals and an assist earning the game’s 1st star.
Linus Ullmark made his NHL debut in net for Buffalo making 24 saves. He was recalled Friday morning while Nathan Lieuwen was sent to Rochester.
Jack Eichel scored late in the 3rd to make it a 1 goal game (his 3rd goal of the season). Buffalo went 2-5 on the power play. Ryan O’Reilly had a three point night but was on the ice for all 4 NJ goals.
Evander Kane left the game late in the 3rd period after a hard hit along the boards deep in the Devils zone. He left under his own power after laying on the ice for several minutes. The Sabres are calling it a lower-body injury and his status is day-to-day, same as Marcus Foligno who was a late scratch.
This victory marked the first regulation win of the season for New Jersey.
