Friday night was a huge night for Williamsville South sports. All 4 of the varsity teams that played at home picked up a win. Boys soccer beat West Seneca East 6-0 to improve their record to 5-4-2. Field Hockey beat Eden 3-2 in an overtime thriller. Abby Ferenczy had two goals including the winner in OT. Jenna Woods also added a goal in the Billies win. Girls volleyball beat Starpoint in 3 straight sets to improve their record to 7-2.
The football team held the stage after all these games finished. The Billies hosted the Sweet Home Panthers in the homecoming football game. This game was played as if it was a playoff game for South. They knew they had to beat Sweet Home for the first time in 20 years in order to keep their playoff hopes alive.
The Billies got out to a rough start when QB Jack Holyoke threw an interception to give the Panthers the ball on the Billies 27 yard line. The Panthers used the great field position to score a 15 yard rushing touchdown. They missed the extra point and the score was 6-0 Sweet Home.
The 2nd quarter started off better for the Billies with a Jack Holyoke TD run that made the score 7-6 Will South. On the following drive, Sweet Home fumbled the ball and senior Luke Corona recovered it to give the Billies the ball back. Unfortunately Will South couldn’t turn it to points and had to punt it away. Later, South had to punt from their own 3 yard line and a Sweet Home defender was able to get a hand on it which gave the Panthers great field position at the Billies 20 yard line. Unlike South, Sweet Home was able to capitalize on the turnover and score on a 15 yard run. The Panthers failed to convert the two-point try and lead 12-7. The Billies came charging back late in the half with a TD pass to Matt Foster, the two-point conversion was good and South took the lead back. Will South lead 15-12 at the end of the 1st half.
The quarter started off in Sweet Home’s favor with a 30 yard passing TD which made it 19-15 Panthers. South’s offense started moving the ball after that. They scored on another TD pass to Matt Foster to make it 21-19 South with 6 minutes left in the 3rd. Then, with 3 minutes left in the quarter, Foster gets the Billies inside the red zone. They capitalized with a 6-yard passing TD to Matt Foster for his 3rd of the night to make 28-19 South. Sweet Home got the ball back, but during that drive they fumbled the ball and Luke Corona came up with the ball once again for the Billies.
South needed strong defense and strong offense to maintain their lead and win. After the Panthers fumble, Holyoke threw a 53 yard bomb to Matt Foster for their 4th TD which made it 35-19 South. However, Sweet Home was not going out without a fight. They came right back and threw a 25 yard TD pass to make the score 35-27 Billies with 9 minutes left in the game. But, South proved to be too much for the Panthers as they got a 28 yard passing TD to Ryan Phillips and a TD run from junior Mark Worthy to give South the 48-27 win. That capped off the Billies huge homecoming weekend.
The Williamsville South Billies showed that they were real contenders in their division and are really shooting for a trip to the Ralph. Senior QB Jack Holyoke ended the night with 6 TD’s, 5 passing and 1 rushing. Holyoke threw 4 of his 5 passing TDs to Matt Foster – showing that they are one of the best tandems in the area. Will South can be deadly when everyone is playing like they should be. Watch out for them down the road because they have the potential to become real playoff contenders.
