Evander Kane and Alex Petrovic each recorded a rare hat-trick on Tuesday night. Some players have scored 3 goals in a game, others 3 assists. Kane and Petrovic had 3 fights, all with each other. The same players rarely fight twice in a game, let alone “thrice”, but Kane and Petrovic evidently had enough differences all game that made it necessary.
By the time the game was over, Petrovic and Kane had over a combined half-hour of PIM and two game misconducts between themselves. The Elias Sports Bureau reported that it was the first trio of fights between two players in a single game since Jody Shelley and Bob Probert duked it out three times on a January 10, 2002 between the Blackhawks and Blue Jackets.
“He’s a big boy,” Kane said after the game. “I thought I’d try to get the crowd back into it a little bit and set the tone a little bit. It just seemed to be a bit of a battle throughout the game.”
Evander Kane has received a lot of heat from the media over the years for his immature antics in the past. But, this is perhaps a sign that the 24-year-old is maturing and becoming a whole player. Kane is frequently called a pretty boy. Would a pretty boy get into three scraps in the same game? I’d doubt it.
Kane spending a majority of the game in the box on a night when Buffalo was starved for forwards (Zemgus Girgensons and Johan Larsson both were out and no room was available for an AHL recall) forced defenseman Jake McCabe to play right wing on the fourth line for the Sabres.
It was a rough 7-4 loss for Buffalo, but certain postives can be taken away. Kane’s gritty performance and Sam Reinhart’s two tallies are examples.
