Bo 2.0? Tebow Pursues MLB

Tim Tebow is best known for his 2007 Heisman Trophy and his outspoken Christianity. He hasn’t played in the NFL since 2012, and now the 28-year-old has his sights set on a career made famous by Bo Jackson. Tebow has made it public this month that he is pursuing Major League Baseball. No, it’s not a joke.

Tebow hasn’t played baseball consistently since 2004 when he was a junior at Allan Nease High School in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. He batted .494 that season and attracted the attention of a Los Angeles Angels scout, Tim Kotchman. Kotchman attempted to get Tebow to pick baseball over football, but Tebow made it clear football was the focus and eventually became an All-American.

“(Tebow) had a strong arm and had a lot of power,” Boston Red Sox scout Steven Hargett said to USA Today. “If he would have been there his senior year he definitely would have had a good chance to be drafted.”

Tebow instead focused on football and we all know what he went on to.  He is training in both Scottsdale, Arizona with Los Angeles with former Major League catcher Chad Moeller, who is confident in his work ethic and dedication. 500 HR club member and current agent Gary Sheffield also believes in Tebow the baseballer and took to Twitter to express his support.

Not everyone, however, has reacted as positively as this. Baltimore Orioles OF Adam Jones mocked the former Heisman winner’s choice with a sardonic tweet.

There is some truth to the negative responses to Tebow’s efforts. Just because he is doing well in training and has the support of some former Major Leaguers does not guarantee he will be successful in a game that he hasn’t played above high school and hasn’t played regularly since then. He has to win over a team before we can think about how “Tebow” will look on an MLB jersey.

I think Tebow has what it takes to make it to the MLB. The man turning 29 on Sunday is a terrific all around athlete and has phenomenal work ethic. What do you think? Is Tebow the next Bo Jackson, or is all this just another Tebow joke that will be swept under the rug in no time?
