Pool Play Complete in Battle Creek at NABF World Series

    Day 3 Recap

    Battle Creek- The final day of Pool Play at the NABF World Series in Battle Creek, MI wrapped up Thursday evening. Two games were decided in extra innings and four of the twelve teams were eliminated from contention. By days end the final brackets would be set and while 4 teams will be heading home, 8 will advance to the next round of the NABF World Series championship.

    Game Recaps

    The Brunswick Orioles defeated the Cleveland Black Wolves 7-5 in the early game. The O’s scored two runs in each of the 1st two innings and added another run in the 5th. Although Cleveland would add two runs in the bottom of the 8th, they couldn’t keep the momentum going in the 9th. The Wolves committed 4 errors in the loss. Each team will have another game later in the day.

    The Fort Wayne Jackers and Chicago Clout needed 11 innings to settle their game. The Jackers came away with 3 runs in the top of the 11th to earn their 1st victory of the tournament. The Clout tied the game in the bottom of the 9th before losing 6-4. The Jackers will have a must win scenario against the undefeated Brunswick Orioles. Chicago is on the ropes.

    Another game that went beyond nine Thursday was the 12 o’clock match-up between Battistoni Diesel and the Lake Erie Buckeyes. The Diesel trailed 4-1 in this game but clawed their way back before heading into extra innings. The Buckeyes entered the game 2-0 in pool play but walked away with the defeat after giving up 3 runs in the top of the 10th. The Diesel secured the No.1 seed in the elimination round (begins Saturday at 11am), going 2-1 in their pool. These teams will now wait to see how they are seeded.

    Hackensack jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on the Beecher Muskies and never looked back. Surrendering just 1 hit and a run in the process. They scored 8 runs off of 12 hits. The Troats moved to 2-1 and earned the top spot in Pool B. The Muskies finished with a 2-1 record as well and will face Battistoni Saturday at 11am. These teams will qualify for the next round with the Troats taking 1st in Pool B.

    The Muskegon Blue Jays cruised past the New Rochelle Robins 9-0. The Jays finished 2-1 while the Robins went 0-3 and scored just two runs, eliminating them from the playoff rounds. The Jays will take on Hackensack on Saturday.

    The Fort Wayne Jackers were no match for Brunswick as the Orioles pounded out 11 runs off 13 hits. They gave up just 1 run on three hits. Ft Wayne committed 5 errors in this one. They were eliminated after going 1-2 in Pool C. The Orioles finished 3-0 and drew Brooklyn Sports Fever in the next round.

    The Brooklyn Sports Fever weren’t interested in being swept in Pool A play. They gutted out a 10-5 win over the hometown HBC Behnke team. Brooklyn dropped two heartbreakers on Thursday and for a moment it appeared another deflating loss was about to go down. Behnke, although trailing by 5, rallied in the 9th, loading up the bases with no outs. Somehow Brooklyn as able to man up and close out another close one. Both teams went 1-2 but Behnke was eliminated with the loss. Brooklyn, always a tough out in Battle Creek, live to play another day.

    The Cleveland Black Wolves and the Chicago Clout rounded out the evening. The Black Wolves came up with the win, defeating the Clout 6-1 sending them home with a 0-3 record. The Clout did manage to load the bases in the 9th but could not muster a comeback. The Wolves finished with 14 hits and 1 error. They’ll face Lake Erie from Pool A on Saturday.
