Preseason Game No. 2 vs. Ottawa Senators
The Sabres pulled out a 3-2 OT win over division foe Ottawa on Tuesday night. Derek Grant recorded a goal and two asssits for Buffalo. Robin Lehner turned in a 37 save performance including one stop in OT to help pick up the win.
Eischel returned to the Sabres locker room on Tuesday for the first time since playing at the World Cup of Hockey. He skated with the morning group that were kept out of Tuesday’s preseason game. Eichel did not speak to reporters. He is scheduled to meet with media after his practice session on Wednesday.
Ristolainen continues to be a hold-out. He was not in camp for a 2nd straight day.
When the Sabres signed forward Derek Grant back in early July to a two-way contract most fans didn’t expect he’d realistically be fighting for a roster spot. That however has changed as he has been one of the newcomers that’s stood out since camp opened.
On Tuesday he assisted on Nick Baptiste’s goal, scored the game tying goal at 15:19 of the 3rd and then set up Jake McCabe for the OT winner.
Grant is 26 and had 40 games of NHl experience split between the team that drafted him, the Ottawa Senators (25) and the Calgary Flames (15). Last year with Stockton of the AHL, Grant scored 27 goals in thirty-six games.
Lehner took a big step forward in his preseason debut between the pipes Tuesday. After spending the summer training with an MMA instructor the feisty goaltender slimmed down noticeably. This was his first NHL game since March 16th. He was shut down last year due to a nagging ankle injury that seemed to plague him since very early last season.
Robin Lehner was not the only Sabres player making a long-awaited return. Tyler Ennis played just over 21 minutes Tuesday, it was his first game action since leaving last December with a concussion.
Next Preseason Game: Thursday @ Toronto 7pm (TV-MSG, Radio-550am)
