The NHL has suspended Sabres defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen 3 games for his hit on Penguins forward Jake Guentzel Tuesday night.
Ristolainen was given a match-penalty for interference and a game misconduct.
The hit has been talked about by fans and hockey media members from coast to coast with differing views as one would expect.
The video below shows that Ristolainen had keyed in on the Pittsburgh player prior to making contact. Guentzel was the prime target of a Sidney Crosby pass and had his head down.
The only explanation for the suspension in my view is that Guentzel was in a vulnerable position and this is the hit the league is looking to take out of the game.
I see no difference in the Chris Neil hit on Chris Drury from the 2007 season that sparked one of the most infamous line brawls in Buffalo Sabres history. Neil did not serve a penalty or suspension for the hit.
I’ll let you be the judge.
Ristolainen is also out $90,000 for the bump.
