San Jose, CA- Evgeni Nabokov called it a career Wednesday, retiring after a 14 year NHL career. In a good will gesture by the team that drafted him the San Jose Sharks reacquired the veteran goaltender so that he could retire as a Shark.
Previously he was property of the Tampa Bay Lightning. GM Steve Yzerman placed him on waivers, and after clearing assigned him to the AHL. Nabokov was not going to report, hinting at retirement. Once Doug Wilson (Sharks GM) caught wind he made a pitch to Yzerman and the deal got done.
Nabokov made the announcement today with his wife, former teammates and coaches at his side.
