The 2015 New Era MUNY AAA season came to a close last Saturday afternoon at ECC North for all but one team, the Battistoni Diesel. The regular season champion Diesel (24-2)  defeated West Herr 13-3 in their opening round match-up Thursday. They then posted a 10-3 victory over Leib’s Friday night. On Saturday, after Leib’s survived an elimination game against Team Deb, they took another crack at their longtime rival Battistoni Diesel.

The Diesel gutted out a 10-6 victory helping them advance to their fifth trip to the NABF World Series. Randy Moley was the tournament batting champion, hitting for an impressive .500 average! Andrew Russo was tournament MVP after posting 9 RBI’s, 5 runs scored and a .416 batting average. He hit a three-run homer in Saturday’s final. Zach Jordan picked up the win. Kevin Hughes and Matt Jimenez were the winning pitchers for BD in their respective post season starts.

Battistoni left Buffalo on Wednesday night and headed westbound to Battle Creek, MI where they will begin “Pool Play” Thursday. In their first of three preliminary games they face the Lombard Orioles (17-9) of the CSBL. The Orioles hail from Lombard, IL and are led by 2nd baseman and sometimes Pitcher Alex Troop. Troop finished the season with a .389 batting average, 14 hits and 15 RBI’s. On the hill he won two of his three starts and posted a 1.29 ERA. This is the only game of the day for the Diesel, first pitch is set for 2:30 pm.

On Friday, BD will play two games.

Their second game comes against no stranger to the NABF World Series. The Cincinnati Chiefs (15-5) from the Southwest Ohio League won their regional Sunday defeating the Cincinnati Hogs 3-1. In their last 4 games played the Chiefs have outscored their opponents 34-5, winning all four games.

At 6pm they take on the Englewood Athletics (19-7) from the North Jersey Amateur Baseball League. The Athletics defeated the Bergenfield Yankees 10-0 on Sunday becoming the first team from the NJABL to reach the NABF World Series. Vito Marichal leads all A’s batters with a .413 batting average. He hit 4 HR’s and recorded 23 RBI’s during the season. Josh Miller and Ian Steepy are also a big part of Englewood’s lineup. AJ Marini is their top pitcher, finishing with 30 K’s and a 2.85 ERA in his 5 starts. Vincent Luppino made 4 starts for the A’s recording a 1.15 ERA.
