The Pioneers placed eight wrestlers at Brockport State in their first action of the season on Saturday, November 2nd.

Junior Kyle Fitzgerald led all Alfred place winners with a 3rd place finish at 285-pounds, avenging a first round loss to Niagara Community College’s Jaquan Johnson in the consolation semifinals to go 5-1 on the day with three pins.

Anthony Miraglia was the next highest placing Pioneer with a 4th place finish at 157-pounds. Alden graduate Owen Kissell finished 5th at 141-pounds and earned two pins going 3-2 on the day. Jesse Johnson (157), Blake Ilges (184), Nick Barrett (285), Brian Hedding (125), and Mike Peck (141) all placed 6th for the Pioneers who entered twenty-one wrestlers in the tournament.

“I think we wrestled well for our first competition of the season,” said Alfred State head coach Justin Signorelli. “With our team mostly comprised of first year college wrestlers, we had eight place winners and eight others pick up wins. We have work to do but it was certainly something positive to build off of and good to see that we are moving in the right direction.”

Alfred State wrestling is in its second season competing in NCAA Division III. Signorelli, who took over as the full time head coach this season, most recently coached at Western New England College and was the head coach at Ulster County Community College before that. Signorelli graduated from Cortland State as a four-year letter winner and a two-year captain of the Red Dragons wrestling team.

The Pioneers wrestling staff also includes assistant coach Andrew Wray, volunteer assistant coaches Adam Willman and Tara Linneman, and strength & conditioning coach Tim Giagios.

The 2019-2020 Pioneers squad features five returning athletes and twenty new additions to the team. The roster consists of individuals from all across New York State, with a dozen men representing towns in the greater Buffalo and Rochester areas.

The revamped schedule for the Pioneers includes a date at the very strong Journeymen Northeast Duals in Albany next Saturday, November 9th. After that, the Pioneers will host Keystone College and Ulster CCC on Saturday, November 16th for their first home action of the season.
